Preschoolers have big feelings, and every week can look a little different – some days they’re twirling their little hearts out, and other days they might just want to watch from the sidelines. And that’s completely okay – it’s all part of the process!
Here are a few gentle ways to help your child feel happy and confident heading into class:
1.Chat positively about ballet the night before or on the way. A little excitement goes a long way!
2. Try to arrive about 5 minutes early – not too early (as that can lead to nerves), and not too late (as it can make separating trickier and sometimes disrupt the flow of the class). That sweet spot helps your little one feel settled and ready to dance.
3.Watching is learning! Some children like to observe for a while before joining in – and that’s totally normal. They’re still soaking it all up, and when they’re ready, they’ll often surprise you with how much they’ve picked up!
> Fairy Feet dancers line up outside and head in together with their teacher – it’s a lovely little confidence-building moment to start the class.
> A calm, quick goodbye works best. Lingering can sometimes make separating harder – short and sweet helps them feel safe and reassured.
> Parents are very welcome to watch from outside! If your dancer seems distracted or keeps checking in, a gentle “drop and go” often helps them settle into the flow.
> Siblings watching from outside are welcome too – we just ask that they stay away from the windows, and avoid banging or tapping, as it can really pull the dancers’ attention away.
> Arrive with enough time to settle in so your little one can feel comfy before the music starts. If we’re rushing in late, it can be a bit overwhelming for them (and for the rest of the class too).
> Keep chatting to a minimum during class – even little whispers can be a big distraction when children are learning to focus and follow along.
> If your dancer or a sibling is upset, feel free to step outside until they’re feeling calm – we totally understand, and it really helps keep the space peaceful for everyone.
